Have You Tried Zoosk- Free Online Dating App? If Not- Now is the Time!

Author: admin  //  Category: iphone applications

Thanks to USA TODAY’s Technology Live Blog for the following story:

A popular online dating service you’ve probably never heard of is trying to change that, beginning with a national TV ad blitz tonight.

This evening, Zoosk will be a staple on the airwaves of ESPN, Animal Planet and others. And its message is simple: It’s willing to offer a free, open site in an industry rife with paid subscriptions. Users who desire added-value services can pay Zoosk a nominal monthly fee.

Of Zoosk’s 50 million registered users, enough are willing to pay for premium memberships and virtual gifts to ring up $30 million in revenue, based on an annual runrate, according to Zoosk. The application — the 30th-most popular free app on iPhone in May — is coming to Android in July.

A key reason for its success is that Zoosk is easily available on open platforms like Facebook, MySpace, Hi5, Bebo and others. “Competing on social media has helped us, versus being a walled garden like (rival) Match.com,” says Zoosk co-CEO Alex Mehr. “We think of online dating as a utility, a service.”

Maybe Zoosk’s approach is catching on. Last week, Match.com, the dating website owned by Internet company IAC, said it will become Yahoo’s online dating site, replacing the Yahoo Personals brand.

Of Zoosk’s 50 million registered users, enough are willing to pay for premium memberships and virtual gifts to ring up $30 million in revenue, based on an annual runrate, according to Zoosk. The application — the 30th-most popular free app on iPhone in May — is coming to Android in July.

IPhone App for Golf GPS- GolfLogix Has It

Author: admin  //  Category: iphone applications

Thanks to World Golf for this story on Golf Logix’s iPhone Golf GPS app-

GolfLogix new iPhone Golf GPS application makes top ten list

World Golf.com Aug 7, 2009

GolfLogix’s advanced golf GPS application is now available for Apple’s iPhone 3G and 3GS Smartphones and is already listed in the top 10 most requested sports applications in the iTunes Store.

Golfers can download a free trial from iTunes or by clicking on the iPhone download link at www.golfgps.com. With the GolfLogix iPhone golf GPS application golfers get convenient distances to the front, center and back of the greens as well as layups and major hazards on more than 24,000 golf courses worldwide. Plus they have access to GolfLogix patented scoring and round tracking technology. This allows golfers to analyze and compare round data such as fairways hit, greens in regulation, distances of each club and more right on their iPhones or on a personalized website hosted by GolfLogix.

GolfLogix is the first major player in the golf GPS handheld market to offer its application to GPS-enabled cellphones such as the BlackBerry and iPhone Smartphones. In less than a week, the GolfLogix application has climbed up the top 10 most requested sports applications in iTunes. “Our application gives golfers more than a digital scorecard. They get a real picture of their game. It’s like having a personal caddie with you for every round,” states Scott Lambrecht, CEO of GolfLogix, Inc. “Our professionally mapped database of more than 24,000 golf courses that has been customer validated since 1999 is also what sets us apart from the other iPhone golf applications.” The Company brings more than 10 years of golf GPS experience as well as its extensive golf course database to the entire Smartphone community.

GolfLogix is offering a 24-hour free trial that starts when a golfer tees off. Following the free trial, golfers are invited to become a GolfLogix community member for $39.95 per year.

Golf Logix’s Membership includes unlimited access to see distances on more than 24,000 golf courses worldwide, scoring and stat tracking both on a Smartphone and on a personalized statistical website at GolfLogix.com, plus valuable discounts on must-have Smartphone accessories. Members will receive ongoing updates and software feature enhancements. The GolfLogix application is currently available on the iPhone 3G and 3GS as well as the BlackBerry Curve, Bold, Tour and Storm. “We want to give all golfers the ability to turn their GPS-enabled Smartphones into the ultimate GPS rangefinder,” adds Lambrecht.

Below is a You Tube video showing how the app works- very cool. Also note: if you like the idea of a stand alone Golf GPS, GolfLogix and other manufacturers will continue to offer them as well. I am a golfer and my favorite place to purchase them is on Amazon.com. Amazon’s Golf GPS Page

They discount them for the most part (except for the absolute newest ones) and their customer service is great.

Amazon Kindle Iphone App- Yes You Can Read Books Anywhere-sort of

Author: admin  //  Category: iphone applications

Thanks to WIRED MAGAZINE’S Blog Network and Charlie Sorrel for this post on the new Amazon Kindle iPhone and iPod Touch app. This FREE app is available on iTunes. The user does not connect to the Kindle store but rather use the Web browser on their iPhone, iPod or computer to buy the content.

The nice thing is that even is you have both the iPhone and a Kindle at home, Amazon’s program will conveniently sych the two so you can keep your place in whatever you were reading and seamlessly pick up where you left off on either. Nice.

P.S. It appears that at least one reader got the app to work outside of the US albeit not over the 3G network - see “update” from a Gadget Lab reader in Japan at bottom of post.

Cruise around WIRED’s Gadget Lab for updates and reviews on other favorite things- cameras, laptops, etc. A very useful site.

March 4, 2009

Kindlers can now read their e-books on the iPhone. Amazon has pushed a Kindle application to the iTunes Apps Store barely a week after the Kindle 2 appeared. We wouldn’t be surprised if the launches were supposed to be simultaneous and the iPhone reader was just delayed by Apple’s problematic vetting process.

The application, like the Kindle itself, is only available in the US of A, which sadly makes sense: you’ll need a US-only Kindle account to use it. The app just grabs the books already bought from Amazon and you can read samples and even buy e-books from the iPhone.

Kindle for iPhone also supports Whispersynch, grabbing updates over the air and letting you read your books on various devices. It even supports auto-bookmarking, so you can put down your Kindle, head out to the shops and seamlessly continue reading on your iPhone as you wait at the checkout.

I’m outside of the US, so I can’t try it. According to Daring Fireball’s John Gruber, though, the page turning is a little clunky. Unlike Stanza, where you just touch the side of the page to flip to the next, the Kindle app requires a finger swipe every single time. With the tiny page size of the iPhone’s screen, this will get old pretty fast.

Still, it’s free, and I want it. I also want a Kindle. Sometimes it sucks not living in the US. But hey, at least we have Spotify.

UPDATE: Gadget Lab reader Hunter just got in touch to tell us about the new application. He’s in Japan right now, but his US iTunes account means that he can download and use the Kindle app. Here’s what he told us:

I’m in Tokyo…and have had no trouble using the new iPhone Kindle app.

I have an Amazon Kindle account on a US credit card with a US billing address and get books through the Kindle download-to-computer the normal way. I got the free app about 3 pm today and immediately got access to my 47 already-purchased Kindle books.

I just ordered another (on my computer) and after turning off the iPhone Kindle app and turning it back on again, the new book was registered on it. Took about 2 minutes from order to on my phone.

So yes, you CAN use this app outside the States, and it appears to coming over the wireless connection with my Apple MacBook Pro. Or over Apple Airport. I will be experimenting to see if it also can come over the normal 3G iPhone network.

By way of evidence, see below for an image I snapped a little while ago of a friend’s book.

Get Fit, Organize Your Life in the New Year With Your IPhone?

Author: admin  //  Category: iphone applications

Thanks to Kevin Purdy at LifeHacker.com for this article on his favorite Iphone apps for keeping your New Year’s Resolutions regarding getting fit, losing weight and generally putting your life in order for the New Year…

The Five Best iPhone Apps for Keeping Your New Year’s Resolutions

Last weekend we suggested 10 tools for sticking to your New Year’s Resolutions. Those with an iPhone or iPod touch, though, have a few additional, always-available tools for keeping up the good self-improvement fight.

Here’s our list of five apps that make tracking, remembering, and motivating your resolutions easier than willpower alone. All of them (except RunKeeper) run on both iPhones and iPod touch models.

RunKeeper for motivating your run

Running is one of, if not the best, exercise plan for those who like immediate, measurable proof of their progress. RunKeeper, a free app that Adam used to roll his own Nike+ iPhone for free, is the data-hound’s running companion. Using the iPhone’s GPS powers, where and how far you went is mapped out (if with a few glitches), your calories burned and average speed marked, and it can all be searched through and/or synced to the RunKeeper web site. For a similar solution with a different mix of strengths and features, try Fitnio. (RunKeeper Free and Pro)

Weightbot for, well, your weight

For just $2, you can grab an app that makes measuring your body weight sort of (seriously) fun. The previously toured iPhone/iPod touch app has a really slick look to it, and takes your weight down in tenths-of-a-pound increments, along with auto-calculating your Body Mass Index. Your day-by-day progress can be graphed out and tracked against a goal weight, and if you’re concerned about friends prone to “Ooh, let me see your iPhone apps!” fever, Weightbot can be password locked before giving away the stats. (Store link)

Remember the Milk for everything else

This one’s a bit pricier, but you’re getting more than just a nagging reminder to do this or don’t do that. With a $25/year Remember the Milk Pro account, its iPhone/iPod touch app (which offers 15 free days to any account) gives you pretty much complete access to all your lists, tasks, alerts, reminders, and whatever resolution you’re plugging in. Plus, using geo-location features, you can goad yourself into stopping by Goodwill to finally drop off those clothes, since you’re already shopping in the neighborhood. As noted in its Top 10 entry, though, RTM’s real benefit is that it syncs itself everywhere at all times. So remembering to buy a better paper filing box while you’re at your desk can pay off the next time you’re in an OfficeMax. (store link)

iOwn to stop hoarding stuff

Most of us can probably do with a little less stuff, and we’re all prone to buying things we already own—I’ll point you to a drawer full of barely-used duct tape, if you’d like. iOwn is a one-stop spot for keeping track of those things you always tend to buy more of, or just want to have more details about the stuff you already have at your fingertips (does the DVD player take component cables, or just S-Video?). You can give any item as many attributes as you’d like, and the full $5 version lets you store, and backup online, as many items as you can think of (the free, Lite version is a 10-item trial). It’s pitched as a total-home organizer, but if you’ve just got one collection or acquisition habit you’re looking to reign in—spices, music, photo frames, whatever—it’s pretty indispensable. (via LA Times Blogs; iOwn free and lite links)

Mint for managing your money

Mint.com’s a streamlined webapp for graphing, tracking, budgeting, and otherwise keeping tabs on your money. Its free iPhone/iPod companion is no less a handy tool, and it’s just as secure and informative. Check your basic balances, browse your last few days’ cash flow, and peek at multiple budgets you set up for yourself from a series of sliding screens. If you fear losing your device and opening up your financial world to the thief, you can remotely deactivate the read-only tool from your Mint.com profile. If you can get your head around Mint’s money management, you’ll really benefit from this app…

That’s our flight of five apps, but we want to hear what free or paid iPhone/iPod apps work for goals and resolutions.
